In order to fulfill the mitzvah of mishloach manot, one has to send two times that are both food. This excludes sending clothes, jewelry, toys or any other non-editable items. However, according to the opinion that holds that the reason for mishloach manot is to increase friendship, then any item that would increase friendship would be considered mishloach manot - even non-food items. It is therefore important to send a mishloach manot package that is appropriate for the recipient.
